HEROES OF OLYMPUS: THE SON OF NEPTUNE
Author: Rick Riordan
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion Books
Summary:
If you thought that Jason had a bad start, you are wrong. While Jason woke up in a pretty decent situation, Percy was in California running from some monsters which didn't die and he couldn't remember anything. So yeah, the situations were not so similar but Percy did end up at camp. Camp Jupiter, a demigod training camp for Romans. He manages to make some friends , Hazel and Frank and later ends up
going on a quest with them. And everything falls into place once he is done with his quest.
Review:
Percy’s side of the story that everyone seemed to be waiting for. “Ok, but where’s Percy?” was that one question almost everyone reading The Lost Hero had. And we finally know his whereabouts in this book. Hera played it pretty smart, giving amnesia to Percy and Jason, the two most popular people from Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter respectively, and then sending them off to the other camp like some sort of peace agreement.
Some people might argue, but whats a better way to solve a feud between two parties that has been going on for centuries?
Percy gets quite a unique entrance at Camp Jupiter with Hera, in her Roman form Juno, announces him as a son of Neptune (Poseidon’s Roman form). And pretty soon, he gets a quest. Interesting tidbit about prophecy for the quest. Unlike the Greeks who got the Oracle for prophecies, Romans have a Book of Prophecies, which was missing when Percy arrived. No official prophecy could be given so Mars (Roman form of Ares) who is also Frank’s dad, made up some random sentences and called it a prophecy. “Go to Alaska, find Thanatos and free him. Come back by sundown on June twenty-fourth or die”
So Percy, Frank (son of Mars) and Hazel (daughter of Pluto, roman form of Hades) go to Alaska to find Thanatos, the god of death. In case you are confused, Hades is the god of dead and Thanatos is the god of death. Thanatos is basically the guy who is solely responsible for death so if he ever takes a day off, nobody will die. And well, this guy was trapped so literally nobody was dying, not even monsters so they had to get him back.
The trio discover that Thanatos was trapped by the giant Alcyoneus. During the quest, they not only freed Thanatos but also found something extremely valuable to Camp Jupiter, valuable to make them heroes of the camp and make the Fifth Cohort popular. But the problems didn't end there because when they returned to Camp Jupiter, a surprise was waiting for them. Camp Jupiter was under attack.
To the north, beyond the gods, lies the legion’s crown
Falling from ice, the sun of Neptune shall drown
